Thessaloniki is not only connected to the sea, but also to the peri-urban forest of Sheikh Sou. The forest is home to 277 species of higher plants, among which some are protected, such as swallowwort (Digitalis lanata). The largest part of the forest (about 75%) is covered by pine forests, while the presence of cypress trees is also important.
