The Church of Saint Dimitrios was built in 413, on the site of the martyrdom of the Saint, patron saint of Thessaloniki. Under the church is the crypt where, according to tradition, the patron saint of Thessaloniki was martyred. In the course of time, the temple was destroyed several times, in large part, turning the historical Temple almost into ruins. In 1988 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
