Irini Paschaleri, the Biologist
Irini Paschaleri is a biologist specializing in nutrition and extremely active. Most people know her from her television appearances in some of the most popular shows of the major channels. Some others from her radio appearances, from the healthy (and delicious) recipes she suggests and, of course, from her articles in magazines, blogs, and sites on the subject of healthy living. And as we all know from experience, the good life also needs a glass of retsina.
REMINDER OF JOY.
Two decades ago, Irini Paschaleri, in collaboration with her dietitian partners, founded the "Natural Health Clinic" Nutrition and Antiaging Center in Thessaloniki, with the aim of improving the appearance and health of visitors, adopting a healthy way of eating, for health and wellness. What thoughts does retsina, a purely Greek wine, bring to the biologist's mind?
"The characteristic taste of retsina on my palate is associated with carefree moments", says Irini Paschaleri, "since it was our usual drink during my student years. Now I consume it less often, although I like it, because I generally drink very little alcohol. But I still associate it with beautiful Sunday lunches with friends".
Among her many activities, Irini Paschaleri has very successfully organized bootcamps for healthy eating and exercise in some of the most important hotels around the country, while together with her husband they have instituted the informative day for pregnancy and motherhood "Baby Boom Event", in Thessaloniki and Athens. And while retsina is a Greek and pure product produced from the fruits of the vine with the addition of resin, nevertheless over the years it was "misunderstood" by a portion of Greeks: "The truth is that by many it is considered a cheap substitute for wine, but not in my own eyes, as I have also tried retsina that are unfiltered or rosé and they are excellent, both in taste and quality," the well-known biologist clarifies.
TOUMBA AND PAOK.
Thessaloniki rightly became so closely associated with retsina, because of the love of its residents. But who are those who, according to Irini Paschaleri, are the biggest friends of this particular type of wine?
"I think that the most typical 'retsina consuming population' in Thessaloniki are the residents of the Toumba area, around the PAOK stadium, without of course this meaning that the fans of other teams don't also consume retsina", she says. Knowing very well – perhaps better than any of us – the value of a healthy diet, Irini Paschaleri knows equally well that nutrition and wine in particular are aimed not only at the body but also at the soul: "Wine is for man a companion in easy times, but and in difficult times. It 'unfolds' us, brings us together, relaxes us, warms our hearts," she says. "If you think about it, every important moment is accompanied by a glass of wine and wishes for health and prosperity".
